Saab 9-5 is an executive car manufactured by Swedish auto maker Saab. The first generation vehicle was introduced in the year 1997, which replaced Saab 9000 for the year 1998. In United States, Saab 9-5 was introduced in the year 1998, as 1999 model year vehicle.

The second generation vehicle was introduced in the year 2009 Sep 15th at Frankfurt Motor Show. It was the first vehicle to get launched by Spyker Cars’ ownership and developed under GM’s ownership.

First generation (1997–2010)

First-generation Saab 9-5 was manufactured using B235 and B205 straight-4 engines. The turbocharged version in the lineup for first generation is named as B308. It has distinctive asymmetrical low-pressure turbocharger. Engine comes with only auto transmission.

2009 saab 9-5

V6 engine is the only power-train attained on Griffin, SE and Arc models. V6 engine in the vehicles are replaced with the turbo straight-4 engine that can produce 220 hp.

Transmissions

9-5 was attained with Aisin automatic transmission for the year 1997 and it was continued till 2001. Aisin automatic transmission replaces the 4-speed auto with a 5-speed auto transmission. 5-speed manual transmission is equipped in the vehicle as standard power-train to the Aero and base models.

Aero models

9-5 Aero is a performance-oriented vehicle that was released in the year 2000 with total horsepower of around 230 hp. This flagship model comprises of quite a few standard features.

BioPower Models

It is not a hybrid edition as there is no batteries under the seats; instead, BioPower models can run either on unleaded or fuel blended from E85 or petrol.

It is equipped with a 2.0-L turbocharged bio-power flex fuel unit that’s capable of delivering 220hp of power and torsion of about 350Nm regardless of the fuel you use.

The bio-power engine uses 85% of bio ethanol (made from crops- grain, beet, sugar, forest residue) and 15% of gasoline. It is offered in both 2-wheel and all-wheel drive versions. These models emit 50-70 percent less CO2 when compared to its petrol equivalent.

Second generation (2010–Present)

The next generation 9-5 is built on Global Epsilon platform and presented at Frankfurt International Auto Show. The 1st Saab 9-5 pre-series has been rolled off from the production line. Saab International Site comprises of more information and pictures of the car. In the year 2010, Saab’s sales announcement was done officially. Production of the vehicle started in April 2010. Saab introduced wagon variant and SportCombi version at Geneva Motor Show.

According to current reports, 2012 Saab 9-5 receives significant updates in order to address quite a few key criticisms.

Christopher McKinnon- Saab’s product boss says that the changes for the vehicle include improved interior and revised suspension. Saab has been inherited from GM with elevating cabin to be more competitive with BMW, Audi, and Mercedes

Changeover for the 9-5 SportCombi will occur, when the vehicle goes for production next year.
